Towards the end of last year, I finally decided to go down the electric car route and purchased a Renault Zoe online. Since doing so we’ve had a lot of upheavals as our drive had to be dug up before fitting an electric charger. It’s done and we’re ready to go electric but there is still no car due to a worldwide semi-conductor shortage. When will it arrive? I have no idea but I know it will come one day soon.

I also know that Jesus will be coming back to earth one day soon. After his resurrection and return to heaven, angels spoke to his watching disciples and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (1) His return to earth is prophesied in the Old Testament book of Zechariah, which speaks of a time when Israel will be facing annihilation as it’s enemies gather to war against it. “I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.” (2)

I’m sure that sounds very far fetched, but everything about Jesus does. He’s both God and man; he was born of a virgin; he performed miracles; he was crucified, died, was buried and came back to life after three days; he left earth from the Mount of Olives and when he returns to earth, it will be at the same place. If we can accept that he is God, God the Son, then it’s easy to accept the rest. The resurrection is fundamental to a belief in the deity of Jesus. The Bible tells us that he “was declared to be the Son of God in power… by his resurrection from the dead.” (3) If Jesus was not raised from the dead the whole of Christianity falls apart. If Jesus is still dead he is not God and those of us who believe in him are complete fools. The thing is, after two thousand years no one has been able to show that he is dead, and the evidence points to the fact that he is alive.

If he’s alive, then it’s true that Jesus will one day return to earth and I believe that it will be soon. Everything about the world points to a worsening situation that will exist when Jesus comes back. We’re not quite there yet, but in recent times we’ve had floods, fires, plagues, and wars breaking out. We’re possibly at the beginning of a change in the world, its economics, its politics, its relationships, that will lead to a terrible world and Jesus returning to bring peace and put things right.

I have no idea when my car will arrive. I have no idea when Jesus will return, but he could return before the car arrives. Why not? I’m ready for his return. Are you? Have you, in your heart an assurance that Jesus is the Son of God and do you trust him with your future? If so, then let me tell you something else that’s exciting. When Jesus returns to earth, you’ll be coming with him. The verses we’ve referenced in Zechariah say, “Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.” You’ll be one of the holy ones, already taken out of this world to be with Jesus. You’ll have time to get to know him before you join him in Jerusalem. It’s an astonishing thought. “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” (4) This happens first. Jesus will meet with those who have faith in him and then he will come to earth to reign. I can’t wait.
