Due to a heart attack almost 14 years ago I have to take medication for life, 6 tablets daily. Unfortunately, I’ve run out, which is not a major problem except that I have heartburn and it won’t ease until I pick up my prescription tomorrow. Heartburn isn’t as bad as man flu but it’s still unpleasant, and like most men I don’t do pain of any sort. I’m a self confessed wimp. It must be awful when you have to suffer with real pain, a constant pain that never ceases and seems to have no end in sight. The huge NHS waiting lists have left many people appreciating what I’m saying. There are so many people desperate for treatment to end their pain but they can’t have it and the pain continues.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be personally free of pain? It must be the heartfelt desire of every sufferer. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live in a world free of pain? No one having to suffer, knees and hips not wearing out, cancers not existing, hearts free of disease, no auto-immune disorders or inherited illnesses. That world once existed, for how long we don’t know, but this current world was once perfect in every way and there was no pain. Life was bliss for this world’s first inhabitants, Adam and Eve. It was bliss but they blew it. This is how:

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’? ”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realised they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”  (1)

You probably know this story and consider it to be a myth, something that it’s ok to tell children but it’s not for adults who are far too intelligent to accept such a story. However, Jesus believed it. He said, “At the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’” (2) He also knew that it was the action of the first couple which brought pain into the world, an unpleasant accompaniment to sin and a righteous judgement of God. God said to Eve, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labour you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (3) To Adam God said, “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.” (4)

That’s how pain entered the world and why we have so much suffering today. It’s also a reason why Jesus came into the world. Out of love for us he came to deal with sin, a necessary precursor to dealing with pain and suffering. He chose to die for us suffering the pain and punishment that would otherwise have been ours. It will still be ours, of course, if we choose not to believe in him and reject his sacrifice. If we reject him we have to face the consequences. If we place our trust in him and follow him we can look forward to a future without pain. If you are suffering today, and there appears to be no end in sight, rest assured that there can be. A faith in Jesus will guarantee an eternal future that has no pain.

The Bible talks about a future day when everything will be different to what we know today, but very familiar to Adam and Eve. The Bible has God saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (5) A pain free world awaits those who believe in Jesus. That could be you.
