We live in a very uncertain world right now. What is going to happen on a global scale now that Trump has been replaced by Biden? What difference is Brexit going to make, as we move on separate from the European Union? What will the world be like after Covid, if that time ever comes? What about the personal battles we all face that threaten our futures? This is definitely a tough time in which to live.

Men and women of all ages, all religions, face the same struggles, but I’m going to boldly state that a faith in Jesus makes the future far less worrying, and brings a peace and security that is sadly lacking in this world. When Jesus died it was to deal with our sin and to bring us into a personal relationship with him. Those who have taken that important step of coming to him in faith are able to claim the promises we find in the Bible. They are not just fanciful words but the very word of God.

God has promised us his continuing presence. He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (1) Whatever difficulties we face, whatever uphill battles we climb, when everyone else may desert us, God does not. Faith in Jesus ensures that we have the presence of God with us at all times, and his presence will always be a comforting one.

Christians can be assured of God’s protection. Nothing bad will ever happen to them unless he allows it, and then it will always be for our good. Everything God does is wise and good. Jesus once spoke of his followers and said, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” (2) Those who know Jesus are held in a vice like grip. Both the hand of Jesus, the Son of God, and the hand of God the Father are holding us tight and protecting us.

When you have faith in Jesus you know that this life is just temporary, just a prelude. The Christian writer C.S. Lewis, in the last of his Narnia Chronicles, The Last Battle, when everything was being summed up wrote, “Now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story no one on earth has ever read, which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”

Jesus made a promise to his followers, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (3) One day Christians look forward to spending a perfect eternity with Jesus, free from disease or death, free from worry or anxiety, free from uncertainty. It will be glorious. Each chapter better than the one before.

Until such a time we continue in this uncertain world but we do so with another certain promise of God, the promise of peace. The Bible counsels us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Since it passes all understanding I can’t describe it to you, but I can assure you that in the darkest hours you can know a wonderful peace if you know Jesus as your Saviour. Put your trust in him and remove uncertainty from your life. You will learn to put this world’s trials into perspective and understand that something far, far better lies ahead for those who have faith in Jesus.
