I’ve just bought a couple of pet/baby monitors, so that we can keep an eye on the dogs at night until the new one settles in. It’s fascinating watching them getting up to all sorts when we leave them, but it’s the technology I want to talk about. For very little money I can watch the dogs on my smartphone from anywhere where I can get Wi-fi, and I can even talk to them. That’s amazing! The phrase ‘Big Brother is watching you’ comes to mind, a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 about a repressive future. The idea of being continually watched by the state was a scary one that’s now coming to fruition, especially in China where the use of CCTV is being developed to such an extent that its citizens are under constant supervision.
Privacy is important to us. We need privacy and there are situations where we don’t want people watching what we do. That’s how I certainly feel, but there is one person who sees everything I do and I’m happy about it, because that person is God. When he made man he ensured that there was no place where we could ever be beyond his view and reach, and therefore beyond his help. He will always be watching ready to step in and help when we call upon him.
Psalm 139 is a lovely psalm which speaks of God’s care for us. Here’s a couple of verses from the beginning of the Psalm:
“You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.” (1)
You may not like the idea of God having this intimate knowledge of you, but I do. It’s good to know he is watching me so closely, and if I am about to do something wrong he will challenge my conscience. The psalm continues:
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” (2)
There’s nowhere we can go where God is not present. Book yourself a future seat on a trip to outer space and God will be there. Dive to the bottom of the ocean and God will be there. Travel as far as you can North, South, East or West and God will be there. He is never far from us and always there to help us. The writer of the psalm understood, and took comfort from the fact, that wherever he was God’s hand would guide him, God’s right hand would tightly hold on to him.
Where are you now, and what is your circumstance? Do you find yourself in great need? Are there problems you can’t solve, worries that are tormenting you? Are you feeling alone, lost, without a friend in the world? You’re not alone. You can’t be. Wherever you are God is there and waiting to help you. He’s a very gracious God though, and won’t act until you ask him to. This is the God who sent his Son, Jesus, to die for you. That’s how much he loves you. He wants to help you, so ask him and see what he can do for you through Jesus.
