I was shocked today, when hearing about an American televangelist who was praying, and saying that angels were coming from Africa to help Donald Trump win the election. It’s wrong on so many levels, most importantly in not appreciating the role that God plays in world affairs.

The televangelist is making a false assumption. She will know that Donald Trump is pro-life, a view that many Christians would support. Her logic must be, that if he approves of what Christians support, therefore he must be the candidate God wants in power. Sadly, the televangelist has failed to grasp a very significant point. That’s not how God works.

There is a time in the Bible when the land of Judah was invaded and Jews were taken as captives to Babylon. It was a sad time. If you’re of a certain age you might remember the Boney M song, By the Rivers of Babylon. It’s taken from a Psalm expressing the sadness Jews felt in being so far from their homeland. They were away from their home for some time, until a future king called Cyrus allowed them to return to Judah, rebuild the Temple, and Jerusalem itself. Did Cyrus do this because he was a good man? History seems to treat him with respect, but that’s not why he did what he did. He did it because God had chosen him to do it, even before he was born.

Cyrus was born in about 600BC, but he’s mentioned by name in the Bible book of Isaiah, which we know to be written between 740BC and 646BC, so at least 46 years before he was born. This is what God says in Isaiah, “I am the LORD, the Maker of all things, … who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.” (1) That’s not the only time Cyrus’ name is mentioned in Isaiah, but this is enough to make the point that it was God who had determined when and how the Jews would return to their land.

God is in full control of this world and he determines who will be in power in any country. It says in the book of Romans, “The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (2) That’s hard for us to grasp, particularly when we think of some of the leaders that have existed. Why would God put them in positions of authority? Well, he doesn’t approve of the evil men do, and he will always punish such evil, so we can be assured that no one will escape punishment for their evil acts. However, God is constantly ensuring that his plan of salvation comes to fruition, and that will involve him in acting in ways that we don’t understand. We have to leave it with him because he’s the only one who knows the whole picture. For that reason, whoever wins the US election will be the man God chooses to place in power, and that may not be the one the televangelist is praying for.

God’s plan of salvation is the most important thing happening in the world today. He is currently engaged in rescuing us from sin and its eternal consequences, enabling us to enjoy the eternal life he always wanted for us. To do this he sent his Son Jesus to die for us, taking the punishment for our sins. He has tasked followers of Jesus to share the good news so that others can believe, and he will continue until the time when he sends Jesus back to earth.

This is your time. Now is the time for you to believe in Jesus if you don’t already do so. Believe that he died for you, say sorry for your sins, and commit yourself to following him. You may be acting for the result of the US election. God is waiting for you.
