Peace is something we all want but few find. The world we live in isn’t conducive to peace, rather it creates huge anxiety. Whether we worry about coronavirus, climate change, do we have enough money to pay the bills, our appearance, am I going to be late for a meeting, everything is a potential cause of anxiety and a peace destroyer. God, however, offers us the prospect of peace in our minds.

In the Bible you discover characters who knew all about peace. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, accused of rape by his master’s wife, and spent years in prison, but there’s no evidence that he ever lost his confidence in God, or his peace. Daniel was taken captive when the Babylonians attacked Israel and destroyed Jerusalem. He never returned home and spent the rest of his life in Babylon. He was at one time thrown into a den of lions, which he survived. Not even that affected his faith and he was known as someone who prayed three times a day, kneeling by a window that pointed towards Jerusalem. He never lost his peace. The greatest example of all is Jesus himself. At one time he was with his disciples in a boat when a dreadful storm grew up. The disciples were terrified but Jesus was calmly sleeping. The peace he had in a storm is available to anyone who knows Jesus as their Saviour.. We can know peace in our stormy times. This peace is a gift given by Jesus himself. Jesus said, “I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid.(1) His peace is different, it’s a heavenly peace designed to stop us worrying, and it works.

It’s normal to worry about daily affairs and troubles that come our way. It happens to everyone and Jesus specifically addressed worry. He knew people worried about what to wear or what to eat so he said this:

“I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds? Can worry make you live longer? Why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow. They don’t work hard to make their clothes. But I tell you that Solomon with all his wealth wasn’t as well clothed as one of them. God gives such beauty to everything that grows in the fields, even though it is here today and thrown into a fire tomorrow. He will surely do even more for you! Why do you have such little faith? Don’t worry and ask yourselves, “Will we have anything to eat? Will we have anything to drink? Will we have any clothes to wear?” Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father in heaven knows that you need all of these. But more than anything else, put God’s work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well. Don’t worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today.”(2)

Coronavirus is a bit more serious than what we eat, drink or wear, but the way we find peace in this crisis is just the same. It’s through Jesus Christ, who loves us and gave himself for us. With Jesus as our Saviour, knowing he loves us and is taking care of us, we can face with confidence whatever the future brings. Trusting in Jesus to look after us brings confidence, and with that confidence comes peace.
