When we face something new for the first time it’s perfectly understandable to worry. First date, first interview, first day in a new job, how do I pay the mortgage, how will I survive financially when I retire, so often we face anxious moments. This coronavirus though is on a different scale, particularly for the over 70s and anyone with underlying health concerns. Living with the constant fear that you might contract it and die is terrifying. How do you cope with the worry, or let’s say it as it really is, the fear?

We’ve been told about washing our hands, using a tissue when we sneeze and the practice of catch it, bin it, kill it. We’ve been introduced to two new phrases, social distancing and self isolation. All this is very helpful and it will give some protection, but I don’t think it does anything for the fear. It wouldn’t work for me anyway, and yet I’m not afraid. Why is that? Am I being naïve, or am I just plain stupid? Am I arrogant enough to think I’ll never catch it, or do I think I’m in a low risk group? Well, I’m 65 with heart disease so I could have a bad time if I do catch it.

I’m not afraid because of Jesus Christ, who is my Saviour. Coronavirus is big but Jesus is bigger. Coronavirus can kill thousands, if not millions, but Jesus has already saved billions from a fate worse by far than a coronavirus attack. Coronavirus is horrific, but sin even more so. Sin, which we have all contracted, brings spiritual death(1), a separation from God throughout life and for eternity. It is a necessary result of man’s rebellion against God, but this same God loved us enough to send his Son to earth from heaven to die for us(2). The death of God’s Son proves how awful is sin and how great is God’s love.

I experience God’s love every day. It brings peace even in troubled times. I have a Saviour who has promised to never leave nor forsake me(3). I live with Him every day and will do so through eternity. That’s why I’m not afraid. I have a guaranteed life with Jesus for ever(4), and so I have no fear of death. I’ll be honest, I don’t much like the process of dying but when my time comes I know where I’m going and who I’ll be going to. I’m going to Jesus who will be ready to welcome me with open arms.

If you are looking for security and a release from fear, Jesus is the answer. He always has been, and always will be the answer to all our problems, but we have chosen to live without him, and look what a mess we’ve made of it. Live with Jesus to know peace and freedom from fear, and to always have someone with you who is far, far greater than coronavirus.
